March 9, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs made a statement today, boosting their offense and defense heading into the playoffs. Defenseman Dave Cousineau and right wing Ben Knopp were acquired from the Phoenix Roadrunners in exchange for defenseman Nathan Horne and forward Kevin Ulanski.
Cousineau is a 6'1", 185 pound native of Waterloo, Ontario that is in his third year of professional hockey. In 38 games this season with Phoenix, he had 4 goals, 10 assists and 63 penalty minutes. He began his career with the Las Vegas Wranglers, scoring 32 points in 67 games as a rookie while also playing a game in the AHL with Toronto that year. He spent last season playing in Europe.
Knopp, a 6'1", 190 pound native of Calgary, Alberta was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 3rd round (#69 overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has 15 points (10 goals, 5 assists) in 30 games this season with the Roadrunners. He split time between Dayton and Pee-Dee last season and also has 80 games of AHL experience with the Syracuse Crunch.
The Ice Dogs part ways with Nathan Horne, who was in his third tour of duty with Long Beach dating back to the WCHL. In 25 games this season, he had one assist and 29 penalty minutes. Kevin Ulanski had played in 51 games with Long Beach this season, scoring 6 goals and 12 assists and accumulating 26 minutes in penalties. Currently in the midst of his rookie season, he won back-to-back NCAA championships while playing for the University of Denver.
"This was a tough deal to make especially since Kevin had been here all year", said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Malcolm Cameron. "These guys provide us grit and the ability to move the puck after the loss of Dan Watson for the year"
The Ice Dogs next game is tomorrow night versus the Stockton Thunder at the Long Beach Arena. Game time is at 7:30 pm. For ticket information, call (562) ICE-DOGS or visit www.icedogs.com.
