Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers have invited all permanent, full-time employees of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools - AND CMS bus drivers - to be guests of the hockey team on Friday, March 10th when the Checkers face off vs. Gwinnett at Bobcats Arena. The teams will face off at 7:00 p.m. The invitation includes principals, teachers, permanent full-time staff and CMS bus drivers.

IN ADDITION ... Elementary and middle school children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools are invited to attend the Sunday, March 12th Checkers hockey game at Charlotte Bobcats Arena as guests of the team. The puck will drop at 4:00 p.m.

Vouchers redeemable for a free youth ticket were distributed to the students based on the latest school system registration numbers. Vouchers good for two tickets each were issued to full-time employees and bus drivers. The wording on both sets of vouchers encouraged the bearers to redeem the vouchers early enough during the week to avoid long waiting lines at the arena on game days.

The invitation to CMS public school children and CMS full-time employees is a tradition with the Checkers and is intended as a means of introducing hockey to kids and adults who may not have experienced the sport, as well as providing reasonably priced family entertainment in a state-of-the-art sports facility. The Checkers front office hopes every one of the multi-thousand vouchers distributed through the schools is used. This is the first year CMS bus drivers have been included. In adding the bus drivers to the Checkers' guest list, CEO Carl Scheer commented, "These wonderful people transport our precious children to-and-from school every day, in every weather. They deserve a medal. We think the least we can do is invite to an exciting hockey game and let them sit back and enjoy being a fan."

"As Charlotte experiences an influx of people from ‘snow countries,' like Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan --- and even Canada -- the demand for professional hockey increases. It's a fast, daring, thrilling sport for children and adults to enjoy," said Checkers president Jeff Longo. "The game is played by athletes who love the sport of hockey and don't demand exorbitant

salaries. Our team, for example, is composed of a great bunch of guys who love to play hard and then hang out with fans afterward to discuss the game. There are no ego issues; they just play the sport because they love it. We hope that enthusiasm is contagious."
