State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes continued their winning ways on Sunday night, notching their seventh straight victory as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters, 3-1, to complete a perfect 6-0 homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (27-19) has won nine games in a row at home, and held onto sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead by a game over Tri-City. The Spikes are now 19-6 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this season, including a 16-2 mark in their last 18 home contests.

Steven Ramos collected a pair of hits and a walk to make his bid to regain the lead in the NYPL's batting race. Ramos is now hitting .360 for the year. Mason Katz helped lead the State College offense with a pair of doubles, and scored an insurance run in the eighth inning to give the Spikes their first lead of more than one run in the three-game series against Vermont (23-25).

Jimmy Bosco's single in the third inning brought in Luke Voit for the first run of the game, and after the Lake Monsters tied it in the fourth on a run-scoring double play ball, Katz reached on an error which plated Carson Kelly to return the lead to the Spikes for good.

The Spikes received another strong pitching effort as well as they held Vermont to just two runs over the past three nights. Nick Petree started and went five innings for State College, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Jhonny Polanco (2-2) tossed two scoreless innings in relief and yielded two hits while recording one strikeout for the win. Michael Aldrete (1) gave up two hits and struck out two in two shutout frames for the save.

The Spikes also turned three double plays on the night to bolster the mound corps, with NYPL All-Star shortstop Cesar Valera part of all three. Valera was one of five Spikes to be named to the NYPL All-Star Game in Connecticut earlier in the day, along with Ramos, Bosco, David Washington and Ronald Castillo. The quintet is set to play in the game on Tuesday, August 13, with Ramos, Washington and Castillo slated to start the contest.

Reliever Tyler Johnson (1-1) took the loss after giving up the second State College run, which was unearned, on a total of two hits and two walks over two innings of work. Johnson also struck out one batter.

Vermont's Ryon Healy went 3-for-4 to spearhead the Lake Monsters' attack, while Luis Baez added a pair of hits.

The Spikes will have an off day on Monday, and then head to New York City to begin a six-game stay in the Big Apple. State College will face the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees) and Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) over the course of the road trip, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Tuesday against Staten Island. The Spikes will send left-hander Jimmy Reed (2-1) to the mound, while the Yankees are scheduled to have left-hander Conner Kendrick (1-2) on the hill.

Following the road trip and the New York-Penn League All-Star break, the Spikes return home on Wednesday, August 14 to face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) in a two-game series, with both games starting at 7:05 p.m. The 14th will be Ladies Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, presented by The Women's Journal, Confer's Jewlers and MAJIC 99, with a post-game $1,000 Diamond Dash in which one lucky lady will find a $1,000 diamond from Confer's Jewlers.
