Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (20-27) defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (20-26) by a score of 2-1 Sunday evening at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers offense in the second inning was the difference in the game. The Tigers scored two runs in the inning on an RBI single by CF Austin Schotts (1-4) and an RBI double by 2B Dominic Ficociello (2-4) that gave the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
The Tigers avoided the three-game sweep behind a dominating performance by the Tigers pitching. The Tigers used five pitchers that combined for nine innings while allowing one run on four hits. Starter LHP Joe Mantiply pitched three scoreless innings. RHP Austin Pritcher relieved Mantiply and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing one run on two hits and struck out five batters. Winning pitcher LHP Logan Ehlers (2-0) picked up his second win as he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. RHP Scott Sitz faced one batter, CF Joel Mejia (2-4) and got him to ground out in the eighth inning. RHP Zac Reininger (6) picked up his sixth save as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
It was a tough evening for the Scrappers at the plate as they combined for a four hit performance in 30 at bats. The highlight for the Scrappers came in the seventh inning as 3B James Roberts (1-4) hit a solo home run over the left field wall that cut the Tigers lead to 2-1. It was Roberts first home run of the season.
