Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Kemp Powers IronBirds to win

The IronBirds moved to 23-21 with a 6-2 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats. Jeff Kemp led the way, smashing a three-run homer in the fourth inning which bounced off the top and went over the wall in left center to give Aberdeen 3-1 lead. He followed it up with a double in the fifth, again driving the ball deep to left center field, plating two more runs and pushing the score to 5-1. In all, Kemp was 3-for-4 on the night with five RBI, coming up just a triple shy of the cycle.

Don't forget about me...

Starting pitcher Mitch Horacek kept the ValleyCats' bats at bay for 7.1 innings. He gave up just two runs on six hits while striking out six batters on the night. He was able to avoid getting himself into trouble, giving up no walks while he was in the game. In five of his seven appearances, Horacek has been able to get through his outing without issuing a free pass and has allowed just two base-on-balls in 36 innings pitched.

Creeping up on first place

With Aberdeen's win and Hudson Valley's loss, 4-3 to Auburn in 13 innings, the IronBird's have pulled to within a half game of the Renegades for first place in the McNamara Division. The IronBird's sit 2.5 games behind State College and 1.5 games behind Tri-City in the Wild Card standings. The IronBirds are looking to make their first trip to the post season in franchise history.

Tri-City continues to scuffle

Last night's loss was the ninth in a row for the ValleyCats. During this rough stretch, they have been outscored 45 to 16 including three losses by way of shutout. After a fast start, they find themselves in a tight race for a playoff spot down the stretch.

On the mound tonight...

RHP Jorge Rivera starts for the IronBirds as they go for their third sweep of the season in this series finale. Rivera is making his fourth start after starting the season off working out of the bullpen. He has a 3.04 ERA and has held hitters to a stingy .191 batting average against. In particular, Rivera has been able to get hitters to beat the ball into the ground, boasting a 2.57 groundball to flyball ratio. RHP Zach Morton will toe the rubber for the ValleyCats. He has a 1-1 record with a 1.65 ERA in eight appearances. This will be his fourth start of the season as he looks to put a stop to Tri-City's nine-game losing streak.
