Record Five Spikes Named to NYPL All-Star Game Roster

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - - Five State College Spikes players, the most in franchise history, were named to the National League affiliates' roster for the 2013 New York-Penn League All-Star Game to be held at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT on Tuesday, August 13. First baseman David Washington and outfielders Steven Ramos and Ronald Castillo were chosen to start the game, while shortstop Cesar Valera and outfielder Jimmy Bosco were selected as reserves for the NL team.

The rosters were announced on Sunday by the league and the host Connecticut Tigers. Connecticut, the NYPL affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, is hosting the league's Midsummer Classic for the first time. The quintet of Spikes will join their NL teammates in facing the All-Stars from seven of the league's American League affiliates in the ninth annual showcase of baseball's future stars.

Members of the Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros, will play with the National League team at the game despite the Astros' move to the American League this year.

Washington is currently tied for the NYPL lead in runs batted in with 33, and his six homers lead the Spikes. A native of San Diego, CA, the 6'5" big man has hit .273 this season and has added 12 doubles.

Ramos led the league in hitting for a spell in the month of July, and is still second in the loop with a .350 batting average while adding stellar defense. The Tracy, CA native has also notched seven doubles, one triple and 13 RBI on the year.

Castillo has been a big producer for the Spikes while in the lineup, compiling a .342 average with three doubles, one triple, one homer and 15 RBI in 21 games. The native Dominican is currently on the Disabled List with an arm injury.

Valera has combined slick fielding at short with a solid bat, hitting .290 with with 12 doubles, three triples and a home run. The Venezuelan also has 21 runs batted in on the year.

Bosco, the lone 2013 Cardinals draft pick selected to the All-Star Game, is hitting .307 with nine doubles, six triples, two homers and 18 RBI. The Granite Bay, CA native was taken by St. Louis in the 13th round of the 2013 MLB Draft and quickly made history with the Spikes. Bosco hit for the cycle, becoming the first Spikes player ever to do so, with a 4-for-5 game against Mahoning Valley on June 26 at Eastwood Field.
