Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

ABERDEEN, MD- The Tri-City ValleyCats desperately needed a win on Sunday in Aberdeen, and that's exactly what they got. Behind a solid outing from starting pitcher Zach Morton, the 'Cats defeated the IronBirds by a final score of 9-3. Coming into the ballgame, the 'Cats nine game losing streak was the team's longest since 2009.

For the fourth straight game, the 'Cats scored first in the ballgame. In the third, Tony Kemp would draw a walk, then advance on a balk. A single from James Ramsay and a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Brett Booth scored the 'Cats first run. Conrad Gregor then followed with a double, scoring another and making it a 2-0 ValleyCats lead.

Each team would score once in the fourth making it a 3-1 game, then the IronBirds would cut into the deficit in the sixth inning. After Morton got Manny Hernandez to ground out for the first out of the inning, Sam Kimmel doubled to center and scored on a single from Mike Yastrzemski, making it 3-2 'Cats. That would end Morton's night.

Richard Rodriguez came on in relief and was able to get Steve Clevenger to ground into a fielder's choice. With two outs, the next batter, Trey Mancini, singled to right field, which prompted 'Cats skipper Ed Romero to make a pitching change and go with Andrew Walter for a righty-righty matchup. It would be successful, as Walter struck out Jeff Kemp to end the inning and prevent futher damage.

The eighth inning is where it would all fall apart for the IronBirds, as the 'Cats put up four runs in the inning on five wild pitches by IronBirds pitchers Jose Figuereo and Eric Green. One of the more entertaining plays of the frame came with one out and runners on the corners. Chan Moon, who was named to the All-Star team earlier in the day, would lay down a bunt that seemed to be a cross between a safety and suicide squeeze, scoring Kemmer and making it a 5-2 'Cats lead.

The next batter, Tony Kemp, would draw a walk to load the bases, and the IronBirds would go to the bullpen to bring in Eric Green. Two more wild pitches from Green would extend the 'Cats lead to 8-2. In the ninth, the 'Cats added one more run on double from Jon Kemmer to make the ballgame 9-2 in favor of the ValleyCats.

J.D. Osborne came on to pitch the ninth to shut the door on the IronBirds, and give the 'Cats their first win since July 25th in Hudson Valley. Ronnie Mitchell was the offensive star for the ValleyCats, going 3-for-5 on the night with three runs scored. Ramsay added two hits, and all but two of the 'Cats batters had at least one base hit.

The ValleyCats remain just percentage points behind the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division. The 'Cats will enjoy their second off-day of the season tomorrow, before beginning a six-game homestand at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium from August 6-11 vs. the Williamsport Crosscutters (August 6-8 ) and Jamestown Jammers (August 9-11 ). Tickets are available now online at www.tcvalleycats.com, by phone at 518-629-CATS, or by visiting the stadium box office.
