Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced Sunday that outfielder/infielder Kevin Mager and starting pitcher Sergio Gomez were named New York-Penn League All-Stars.
The two will represent the Spinners at the New York-Penn League All-Star festivities August 12 and 13 in Norwich, Conn., hosted by the Connecticut Tigers.
Mager, 24, is in his second professional season and has played left field, first base and third base for the Spinners in 2013. A non-drafted free agent from Rollins College, Mager ranks amongst team leaders in most offensive categories. Entering Sunday's game, Mager is batting .306 (1st) with nine doubles (1st), one triple, two home runs (T-1st), 26 RBI (1st) and 20 runs scored (T-2nd).
Gomez, 21, is in his fourth season as a professional. The native of Columbia, Gomez debuted as a 16-year-old with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox and made a one-start appearance with the Spinners in 2012. In 2013, Gomez is 2-1 with a 1.81 ERA (3rd in the NYPL) with a team-best 50 strikeouts (3rd in the NYPL). Operating as a piggy-back starter, Gomez has pitched in nine games, five starts, and held batters to a .212 average while posting a 1.07 WHIP.
Right-handed pitcher and 2013 ninth round draft pick Kyle Martin was also selected to the team but was promoted to the Greenville Drive July 31. In 10 games out of the bullpen, Martin was nearly unhittable, posting a 2-1 record with two saves and a 0.47 ERA. Over 19 innings, Martin limited opposing batters to 11 hits while striking out 15 and had thrown 10 consecutive scoreless innings before his promotion.
The trio will head to Norwich following the first-place Spinners six-game roadtrip through Mahoning Valley and Staten Island August 6-11, with pre-game festivities August 12 and the game itself August 13. The Spinners return to LeLacheur Park Wednesday, August 14 for a six-game homestand to start the playoff push.
