Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds fell behind to the Tri-City ValleyCats, and the ValleyCats added distance late, as the IronBirds fell, 9-3.

The loss snaps a 9-game losing streak for the ValleyCats, The IronBirds failed to sweep the series, but took 2 out of 3, and concluded their 5-game home stand with a 3-2 record.

IronBirds' starter Jorge Rivera battled through his first two innings, putting up scoreless frames despite allowing a runner to second base in each inning. In the third, however, the ValleyCats broke through, scoring two runs on two hits to grab a 2-0 lead.

The ValleyCats added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from third baseman Ryan Dineen, and the IronBirds trailed, 3-0.

Meanwhile, through three innings, Morton had been perfect, not allowing a hit while recording seven ground ball outs. The IronBirds finally got their first hit in the fourth, a hard single to left off the bat of Sam Kimmel. Mike Yastrzemski would follow with a walk, and with two outs, a wild pitch would score Kimmel, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The IronBirds would draw closer in the sixth. With one away, Kimmel socked a double to left- center. The very next pitch, Yastrzemski grounded an RBI single up the middle, sending Kimmel around, and the IronBirds had narrowed the margin to 3-2.

Alex Santana came on in relief of Rivera in the fifth, and kept the ValleyCats from widening their lead. Santana pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits, striking out two without walking a batter. Santana breezed through his first two innings, but had to escape trouble in the seventh. He allowed a leadoff single to Tri-City second baseman Tony Kemp, then balked him to second, but stranded him at third to keep the score at 3-2.

But the wheels fell off the bus for the IronBirds in the top of the eighth. The ValleyCats used two hits, three walks, four wild pitches, and one costly error to put up four in the inning, taking a commanding 7-2 lead.

Tri-City added on to their lead again in the ninth, plating two more. While the IronBirds would get one back on an RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Jack Graham (his first RBI as a member of the IronBirds) it would not be enough, as the ValleyCats pounded out 11 hits en route to the 9-3 victory.

While the IronBirds fall to 23-22 on the season, they stay just a half-game back of the division- leading Hudson Valley Renegades, who were swept at home by the Auburn Doubledays.

The IronBirds head on the road following the second scheduled off-day of the season.

Starting Tuesday, they will play three against the Doubledays, followed by three more taking on the Muckdogs in Batavia. The team will not return home until August 14, when they take on the Staten Island Yankees.
