WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (August 4, 2013) - After Saturday night's difficult 4-3, extra-inning loss, the Renegades were hoping for a bounceback game with a 5:00 Sunday afternoon start. The Auburn Doubledays may have had the league's worst record, but they certainly didn't play like it over the weekend. Gary Cathcart's team came out firing on all cylinders and set the early tone with four runs in the first inning off Aaron Griffin. It became a very long affair for the 'Gades, who ultimately lost the finale 13-4 before their second day off on Monday.
The Doubeldays sent all nine batters to the plate the first time up, and greatly benefitted from a pair of errors. In the inning, Jimmy Yezzo's sacrifice fly to left field and Kyle Attl's two-run grounds rule double were the decisive blows in a rough inning. Griffin's perfect 3-0 record was put to the ultimate test, but he responded by retiring the Doubledays in order over the next two innings.
With the score still 4-0 in the fourth, two straight doubles by Cody Dent and Isaac Ballou made it 5-0. Matt Reistetter's ground ball to second base took a tricky hop past Ariel Soriano and gave the Doubledays a six-run lead. Hudson Valley got a one out single by Omar Narvaez off Jake Johansen in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Ryan McChesney bounced a single into right and Granden Goetzman brought in a run with a single into center to make it 6-1.
That score held until the seventh inning, when the Doubledays sent eight more hitters to the plate against relievers Harmen Sidhu and Tyler Gauthier. Base hits by Bryan Lippincott and Jean Valdez put two runners on for Cody Gunter, who plated the pair with a double to extend the lead to 8-1. Two batters later with Sidhu out of the game, Attl's RBI single off Gauthier continued the barrage and gave the Doubledays a season-high nine runs.
Julian Morillo opened the Renegades seventh with a walk, and later came into score on an RBI double by Johnny Field. At 9-2, Auburn got into double digits with two runs in the eighth before Hudson Valley added a pair of its own in the bottom of the inning, due in part to an RBI single by John Alexander. The Doubledays then came back for more against Eli Echarry in the ninth, getting an RBI single from Reistetter and a bases loaded walk to Lippincott. The last bit of action from the 'Gades was a one out single by Darryl George in the ninth, but Ryan McChesney popped out to first to end the game and close out the weekend.
NOTES: The 13 runs on 17 hits are new season highs for the Doubledays, who hadn't won two games in a row coming into this series...the 13 runs allowed by Renegades pitching is a new high while the 17 hits match the most this season...Griffin (3-1) took his first loss after throwing six innings for the third straight start...James Harris, Narvaez, and Goetzman each finished with two hits...Harris had at least two hits for the fourth game in a row...Sidhu had to leave the game in the seventh inning for Gauthier after just two thirds of an inning.
The Renegades will have their second day off of the season on Monday before embarking on a six game roadtrip. Following three game series in Batavia and Mahoning Valley, the team will have two days off for the All-Star Game on August 13 at Dodd Stadium in Connecticut. The Renegades will send four players to represent the American League team: second baseman Ariel Soriano, third baseman Darryl George, catcher Oscar Hernandez, and lefty pitcher Kevin Brandt. The Renegades next home game is Thursday, August 15 against the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05 PM.
