Spinners Let Opportunity Slip By, 11-3

Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Batavia Muckdogs jumped out to an early lead and a four-run sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Lowell Spinners, as they dropped the final game of a six-game homestand, 11-3, Sunday evening at LeLacheur Park.

The loss dropped the Spinners into a virtual tie with the Tri-City ValleyCats for first place in the Stedler Division after Tri-City snapped a nine-game losing streak with a win over Aberdeeen.

Batavia (22-23) jumped on the Spinners right out of the gates after an hour long rain delay. Luis Ortiz singled and stole second, advancing to third on an infield single by J.T. Riddle. After Riddle stole second himself, a sacrifice fly brought in Ortiz and a two-out triple by Carlos Lopez to give the Muckdogs a 2-0 lead.

Lowell (26-20) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning after newly minted New-York Penn League All-Star Kevin Mager struck a two-out double down the left field line. Danny Bethea brought him in with a single to cut the lead to 2-1.

The score remained there until the fifth inning when the Muckdogs added an insurance run after three consecutive singles, capped by an RBI single from Ortiz to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Spinners had a chance to take the lead, or at minimum tie it up in the bottom half of the inning, but it was largely a wasted opportunity. Jantzen Witte led off with a single through the hole at short and Aaron King doubled to right to put two men in scoring position with no outs. A wild pitch scored Witte and moved King to third but a strike out, pop out and fly out ended the inning with King stuck at third and the Spinners down a run.

The wasted opportunity was costly for Lowell as the Muckdogs got to Dylan Chavez for four runs on five hits, highlighted by two-run double by Austin Dean, giving Batavia a commanding a 7-2 lead.

The Spinners picked up a run in the eighth after Nick Moore tripled to lead off the inning. Miguel Rodriguez brought him home with a groundout but Lowell could pull no closer.

The Muckdogs tacked on four runs in the ninth against Carlos Pinales for an 11-3 final.

No Spinner collected more than one hit, with Mager and King doubled while Moore tripled in defeat.

Ty Buttrey (3-2, 2.65) started for the Spinners and allowed three runs on six hits through five innings. He did not walk or strikeout a batter. Chavez struggled after back-to-back scoreless performances, allowing four runs on five hits in an inning of relief. Taylor Grover was flawless in two perfect innings while Pinales was tagged for four runs on four hits and a walk in his one inning of work.

The Spinners hit the road for their longest trip of the season through Mahoning Valley and onto Staten Island leading into the All-Star Break. The league is off Monday for travel before the Spinners get back in action Tuesday night in Niles, OH with Jamie Callahan and Daniel McGrath on the mound.
