Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Five Vermont Lake Monsters have been selected to participate in the 2013 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, August 13th at Connecticut's Dodd Stadium. That includes three players, pitcher Brent Powers along with outfielders B.J. Boyd and Boog Powell, chosen as starters for the American League affiliates in the league ninth annual All-Star Game, the New York-Penn League announced today.

Joining Powers, Boyd and Powell on the 28-man American League squad will be closer Trevor Bayless and first baseman Ryan Huck. The American League team includes six players from Staten Island (Yankees), five from Vermont (Athletics) and Mahoning Valley (Indians), along with four from Aberdeen (Ironbirds) and Hudson Valley (Rays), while two apiece from  Connecticut (Tigers) and Lowell (Red Sox).

Powers was selected as the AL starter after going 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA, currently fourth-best in the league, over his first nine starts for the Lake Monsters this season. Boyd leads Vermont with five home runs and a .320 average, just ahead of Powell .319 average and team-leading 25 runs scored. Both Boyd and Powell, who are among the top 10 hitters in the  league, will be joined in the starting AL outfield by Aberdeen's Mike Yastzremski.

Bayless was chosen as the AL closer after going 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA and a league-leading six saves over his first 13 appearances for Vermont. Huck is one of nine position players selected as a reserve after hitting .306 with six doubles in 21 games for the Lake Monsters before missing the last  10 days with an injury.

Despite the Houston Astros move to the American League this season, their NY-Penn League affiliated Tri-City ValleyCats will remain part of the National League team for the All-Star Game to keep the two teams balanced at seven affiliates apiece. The Jamestown Jammers (Pittsburgh Pirates) lead all teams with seven players selected to the All-Star Game.

The All-Star festivities begin with an All-Star Gala at Mohegan Sun on Monday, August 12th at 6:30 pm and an All-Star Luncheon at the Holiday Inn Norwich on Tuesday at noon. Tickets for the game can be purchased online at cttigers.com, by phone at (860) 887-7962 or at the Dodd Stadium Box Office.
