Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA --- State College capped off a perfect 6-0 homestand with its ninth straight home win as the Spikes completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 3-1 New York-Penn League victory Sunday evening @ Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.ÃâÃÂ
The Spikes, who lead all of Minor League baseball with a 2.43 ERA, held Vermont to just Ãâàtwo runs on 17 hits over the three-game sweep. The Lake Monsters only run on Sunday came when Melvin Mercedes grounded into a bases loaded double play in the fifth inning that tied the game 1-1. Ryon Healy was 3-for-4 and Luis Baez 2-for-3 to combine for five of Vermont' s eight hits.ÃâÃÂ
State College had taken 1-0 lead in the third on an unearned run off Vermont starter Bobby Wahl, then took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with another unearned run off reliever Tyler Johnson (1-1). After a one-out Carson Kelly single and wild pitch, Baez made a throwing error on a grounder to short allowing Kelly to score from second base with the eventual winning run.ÃâÃÂ
The Spikes added an insurance run in the eighth off Kayvon Bahramzadeh on a ÃâàMason Katz leadoff double and pair of flyouts, including a Luke Voit sacrifice fly. Katz had two doubles and Steven Ramos went 2-for-2 with a walk for State College (27-19). Jhonny Polanco (2-2) and Michael Aldrete (first save) both tossed two scoreless innings in relief of starter Nick Petree.
Despite the three losses, Lake Monster pitchers held a State College team that came into theÃâàseries second in the New York-Penn League with a .276 team average and 203 runs scored (4.72 per game) to just a .240 average and six runs over the three games.
Vermont will now face the league leader in average (.282) and runs per game (5.26) when the Jamestown Jammers come to historic Centennial Field on Tuesday at 7:05 pm as the Lake Monsters open a six-game homestand through Sunday, August 11th.
