Sounds' five-run fifth sends \'Topes to11-5 defeat
June 23, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Nashville's Warren Morris keyed a five-run fifth inning with a two-run single en route to his second four-RBI performance of the series to lead the Sounds (40-35) to an 11-5 rout of the Albuquerque Isotopes (41-34) Thursday night at Isotopes Park. Ryan Jorgensen recorded a pair of hits, including his second home run of the season, for the âTopes.
Sounds starter Justin Lehr (7-6) pitched in and out of trouble as Albuquerque left seven men on base through the first six innings. In all, the right hander allowed three runs on eight hits in six frames. Corey Hart had four hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs for Nashville while teammate Tony Zuniga drove in four - two coming on a seventh-inning homer.
âTopes starter Peter Bauer (3-5) was roughed up for nine runs - eight earned - in 4.1 innings of work. Clint Weibl pitched the final three frames for Nashville to earn his second save of the year.
The Sounds scored an unearned run in the second inning and plated three in the third - highlighted by a two-run triple by Morris - to build an early 4-0 lead. The âTopes closed the gap to two with a pair of runs in the home half on a lead-off homer by Jorgensen and an RBI-single by Chris Aguila. But Nashville responded with a five-run fifth and added two more in the seventh to blow the game open.
Jorgensen drove in his second run of the night with a single in the sixth before the âTopes made some noise with a pair of runs in the ninth - thanks to a solo home run by Mark Little and a run-scoring single by Todd Sears.
The âTopes will take on the Sounds in the final game of a four-game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-handed starter Les Walrond (4-5, 4.57) is scheduled to take the mound for Albuquerque against Nashville righty Gary Glover (1-0, 0.82). Come out and see BirdZerk! and his hilarious antics throughout the contest. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
