Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-2 on the road Friday. It was the Sound Tigers' second straight win on the road and their third in a row overall.
The Sound Tigers opened the scoring 9:30 into the game when Matt Koalska chipped home a rebound off a pretty play by Evgeny Tunik. It was Koalska's third goal of the season and Tunik's fifth assist in a week.
Philadelphia tied the score at 1-1 with 6.5 seconds left in the opening frame when Dan Cavanaugh poked a rebound through a scramble in the Sound Tigers slot for his first marker of the year off assists from Eric Meloche and Stefan Ruzicka.
The Phantoms took their first lead of the evening at 2-1 on a power-play goal by Pat Kavanagh, his fourth overall of the season, off an assist from John Slaney 9:29 into the second period, but the Sound Tigers tied the score and regained the lead with a pair of tallies later in the frame.
Travis Brigley redirected a Vince Macri shot for his third goal of the year at the 12:33 mark to tie it at 2-2 with Rob Collins earning the other assist to increase his assist and point streak to five games. Allan Rourke, in his first game back in the line-up after missing eight in a row with a high ankle sprain, put the Sound Tigers back in front at 3-2 with his second marker of the year off assists from Jeremy Colliton and Sean Bergenheim with 1:10 left in the middle frame. Rourke is now on a four-game scoring streak while Colliton has points in the last three contests and Bergenheim has helpers in three in a row.
Philadelphia doubled the Sound Tigers in third-period shots on goal with a 10-5 advantage and pulled goaltender Rejean Beauchemin in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute-and-a-half left to play but took a bench minor for too many men on the ice with 20.7 ticks left on the clock and could not tie the score.
Rourke was the first star of the game, Sound Tigers netminder Chris Madden was the second and Dan Cavanaugh was the third. Madden made 28 saves for his third win in as many starts while Beauchemin made 25 in a losing effort. The Phantoms were 1 for 4 on the power play and had a 30-28 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 9 on the power play
The Sound Tigers will continue a three-game-in-three-day weekend when they visit the Springfield Falcons Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Sound Tigers will return home to host the Lowell Lock Monsters this Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
