Manchester, NH - The goals came in bunches but ultimately it was the Manchester Monarchs (7-3-0-1) taking a 5-4 shootout victory over the Lowell Lock Monsters (6-5-0-2) at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.
The Monarchs took the early lead, taking advantage of a Lowell turnover deep in their own zone. Connor James slipped in a rebound just 30 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0. Richard Petiot made it 2-0 in favor of Manchester just four minutes later. Recently returned from the LA Kings, Petiot's first career goal was a slapper that beat G Kevin Nastiuk and went in off the right post. Lowell rallied over the remainder of the frame, adding up physical play and offensive opportunities and led in shots 13-9 despite trailing 2-0.
The Lock Monsters started the second period strong, pulling within a goal less than two minutes in. Brad Richardson fired home his second of the season with a wrist shot from the right circle at 1:17 to make it 2-1. Add in some aggressive play and a couple of power plays and the Monsters amassed a 12-2 shot lead through the first 15 minutes of the period. And it was on the power play that Lowell tied the contest. Richardson's wrist shot from the top of the right circle was redirected past G Barry Brust by Chad Larose for his seventh of the season at 12:41. David Gove tucked in his third of the period to give Lowell their first lead of the game later in the stanza. The Centerville, Massachusetts native skated down the left side and cut to the net around the defense to make it 3-2 Lock Monsters.
Another two-man advantage power play goal extended the lead for Lowell in the third. Keith Aucoin notched his sixth of the campaign at 7:58 to make it 4-2. Andrew Ladd picked up his second assist of the game and the season on the tally. Manchester went without a shot for the first 11-plus minutes of the third frame, but their first shot of the period pulled them within a goal. Brad Smyth's wrister from the right circle beat Nastiuk cleanly to make it 4-3. They tied it while shorthanded with Petr Kanko's rocket from the left point at 14:18. The two clubs skated into overtime tied at four, despite a 33-21 shot advantage for the Monsters.
Neither team scored in an exciting overtime period that went nearly four minutes without a whistle and ended with a brief two-man advantage for Lowell. The Monarchs took the game in the shootout however, as they outscored Lowell 3-2 in the extra session, taking the 5-4 win.
