Bridgeport Islanders News Release

Defenseman Travis Hamonic assisted on a goal and scored the game-winner in overtime as the Sound Tigers earned their first road win of the season, a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in Manchester. With the win, the Sound Tigers move to 3-5-0-0. Manchester falls to 5-2-1-1.

The Sound Tigers took the lead in the first period following a Brandon Kozun high stick to the face of David Ullstrom The Jonkoping, SWE native responded by taking the ice on the ensuing power play, receiving a pass from Jesse Joensuu in the left wing corner and using some fancy stickwork to sneak the puck past Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. The goal was Ullstrom's third goal of the season, and the Sound Tigers had a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Late in the second, the Sound Tigers added to their lead. Rob Schremp, who was assigned on Friday to the Sound Tigers on a conditioning stint from the New York Islanders, made a nifty play behind the Manchester net and fed Rob Hisey in the slot. Hisey fired a one-timer into the top of the net to beat Zatkoff for his third goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers ahead 2-0.

However, the Monarchs clawed their way back into the game. Midway through the third period, David Meckler had his initial shot from the right circle blocked, but collected the puck and fired a shot that snuck between Sound Tigers netminder Kevin Poulin and the near post to cut the Sound Tigers deficit in half. With 6:37 remaining in regulation, Manchester evened the score following a Jean Bourbeau tripping penalty. Alec Martinez collected the puck by the right-wing faceoff circle and beat a screened Poulin to tie the game at two. Manchester continued to fire away down the stretch, but Poulin held his ground to set the stage for Hamonic to provide the overtime heroics.

Poulin made 25 saves to earn the third star and the win for the Sound Tigers. Jeff Zatkoff made 27 saves in the loss for Manchester.

The Sound Tigers return to action this Wednesday at 11 a.m. to face the Springfield Falcons in the Sound Tigers annual "Cool Fun 101" game, which highlights education in hockey to students.
