Charlotte Checkers News Release

Binghamton, N.Y. - Charlotte Checkers forward Nick Dodge tied the game with 15 seconds left in regulation but the Binghamton Senators had other plans as they spoiled the comeback attempt with a 4-3 overtime victory.

Bobby Butler scored the game-winning goal at 3:53 of the extra frame while goaltender Barry Brust stopped 30 of 33 shots for the win. Charlotte netminder Justin Pogge made 45 saves in a losing effort.

The Checkers struck first, five minutes into the first period on the power play, when Zach Boychuk notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Boychuk received a saucer pass from Bobby Sanguinetti just inside the right-wing blue line before taking two strides and snapping a low, far-side shot past Brust. Bryan Rodney picked up the secondary assist.

Chris Terry then gave the Checkers a two-goal lead in the final minute of the first period when he deposited a rebound off a point shot by defenseman Michal Jordan. Jordan, Carolina's fourth-round selection in the 2008 draft, picked up his first professional point in his fourth career game.

The Senators would storm back in the second and score three unanswered goals. Ryan Keller rifled a shot over the glove of Pogge to make it 2-1 before leading scorer Corey Locke tied the game when he one-timed a back-door pass into the back of the net. Eric Condra then put his team ahead, 3-2, when he walked out of the corner and roofed a backhand shot over the right shoulder of Pogge.

Dodge tied the game up with 15 seconds left to play when he tipped a Brett Carson shot from the right-wing point that trickled by Brust.

Three minutes into the overtime period, Boychuk was called for tripping and the Senators went to work on a 4-on-3 power play. Butler received a cross-ice pass from Locke and one-timed it past a defenseless Pogge for a 4-3 Binghamton victory.
