Monarchs Name Cliche Captain

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have named center Marc-Andre Cliche the team's Captain, and defenseman Thomas Hickey, defenseman Alec Martinez and center Oscar Moller as alternate captains for the 2010-11 season, Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris announced today. Hickey, Martinez and Moller will serve as part of a triumvirate rotation for the two assistant captain positions.

"Marc-Andre embodies all the qualities of a true leader," explained Morris. "His high compete level coupled with his grit and determination will serve as a great role model for this young team. Marc-Andre's sharp wit, his honesty and keen sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes. He's earned the respect of the coaches and members of the organization, as well as teammates. We have witnessed him bounce back from serious injuries and watched him shut down some of the top forwards in the league. He is a key member of our penalty killing unit and his example will set a standard for others to follow."

Cliche, 23, follows in the footsteps of Dane Jackson (2001-03), Richard Seeley (2003-04 and 2005-06), Chris Schmidt (2004-05), Brendan Buckley (2006-07), Jon Klemm (2007-08), Gabe Gauthier (2007-08), Marty Murray (2008-09) and Drew Bagnall (2009-10) as Captain of the Monarchs.

This will be Cliche's first time wearing the honorary "C" in his jersey. The 6-foot, 198-pound native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec was a member of the Lewiston MAINEiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2003-07. Cliche helped advance the MAINEiacs to the 2007 Memorial Cup tournament by recording 22 points in 16 post-season games. That same year, Cliche was a member of the gold medal winning Team Canada at the 2007 World Junior Championship.

Hickey, 21, is in the midst of his second full season with the Monarchs. Hickey has appeared in 34 career games with the Monarchs, scoring three goals alongside 12 assists for 15 points (3-1215). A first-round, fourth overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Hickey was sidelined with a shoulder injury for most of the 2009-10 season.

Martinez, 23, was a member of the Miami University (Ohio) hockey team from 2005-08 were he set career highs in points and assists. During his time at Miami University (Ohio), Martinez was named the CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman. Martinez was one of two Miami defensemen to skate in all 42 games during the 2006-07 season.

Moller, 21, captained Team Sweden at the 2009 World Junior Championships. Selected by the Kings in the second-round (52nd overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Moller signed a three-year entry-level contract on April 22, 2008. He has appeared in 74 games with the Kings and 55 games with the Monarchs.
