Third Period Heroics Give Devils 3-2 Win

Albany Devils News Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A late third period goal by Stephen Gionta helped give the Albany Devils a 3-2 victory at Providence on Saturday night. The Devils, backed by 30 saves by Jeff Frazee, scored two goals in the final period to earn their fifth victory of the season (5-2-0-0) and remain undefeated on the road.

Moments after the team successfully killed off back-to-back Providence power-plays, Brad Mills received a pass from David McIntyre in the neutral zone. Mills gained the blue line and sent a cross-ice feed to Gionta at the top of the left circle. The Devils' captain sent a bomb through the arms of Bruins goaltender Nolan Schaefer for the game-winner.

The Devils played in their fifth one-goal game of the season and had to fight back after falling behind, 2-1, 3:51 into the third period. Jordan Knackstedt, who also scored at 3:59 of the second, gave his team its first lead of the game off a pass from Levi Nelson and Joe Colborne.

Mills joined Knackstedt with a two-point night. He registered the first goal of the game and his third of the season at 13:22 of the first by using his speed to outraced Schaefer to the far post on a wraparound try. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Nick Palmieri each earned assists - their first of the season

Entering the game, Albany had outscored opponents, 7-3, in the second period. However, Knackstedt bucked that trend with his goal setup by Colborne at 3:59.

For the fifth time this season, the Devils entered the third with the score tied. Providence grabbed the lead, but Matt Anderson evened things up 7:39 in when he fired a one-timer off a rebound from a blast from Alexander Urbom. The goal was Anderson's first of the season, while Urbom picked up his second assist in as many games.

Albany relied on Frazee in the third. He made 10 stops in the final period, including a sprawling save with one second remaining. Frazee helped the Devils kill off six Bruins' power-plays, earning his fourth victory of the season.

Albany returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Syracuse.
