Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators kicked off a weekend of back-to-back home games with a Friday evening tilt against one of the newest members of the American Hockey League's East Division, the Charlotte Checkers.
The Checkers entered the game in the eighth and final spot of the East Division, but showed they weren't to be taken lightly as they jumped to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period.
Zach Boychuk notched his fifth of the season at 5:48 to put the Checkers on top 1-0. Chris Terry added to Charlotte's lead with 59 seconds left in the opening stanza to put Charlotte up by two.
The second period the B-Sens came out with new life in their skates, outshooting the Checkers 16 to 9 and scoring three straight goals to take over the game's lead.
B-Sens' captain Ryan Keller notched his third goal of the season just 4:16 into the period. Colin Greening and Jim O'Brien added the assists.
Charlotte's Matt Kennedy was issued a cross-checking penalty at 13:27. Corey Locke would then add his third goal of the season, assisted by Derek Smith and Andre Benoit on the ensuing power play.
With just 12.1 seconds remaining on the clock, second year forward Erik Condra picked up his own rebound, lifting the puck up and over the shoulder of Checkers net minder Justin Pogge to put the B-Sens in the lead for the first time in the game.
The B-Sens appeared to have the game locked up, blanking the Checkers for the majority third period. However, Nick Dodge was able to find the back of the net with just 16 seconds left to play in regulation. The Charlotte winger's late-game heroics tied the game at 3-3, forcing the B-Sens into overtime for the second consecutive game.
A costly tripping penalty on Boychuk gave the B-Sens an early power play opportunity in the extra period, which Bobby Butler took full advantage of. With helpers from Locke and Mike Hoffman, Butler netted the game-winner at 3:53 of OT, giving Binghamton the 4-3 victory.
The B-Sens will complete their two-game home series against the Checkers tomorrow night. Game time is
set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
