Phantoms Drop Hard-Fought Decision

October 29, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

David Laliberte scored his first goal of the season but it wasn't enough for the Adirondack Phantoms in a 4-1 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

LaLiberte had 18 goals with Adirondack last year and also 2 goals with Philadelphia. October 30th is the anniversary of his first NHL game in which he scored a goal in the 2nd period on his first ever NHL shot.

The Phantoms are in good company in the setback to the top team in the AHL as the Penguins remained the only undefeated team at 7-0-0.

Adirondack limited Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to only 20 shots on goal on the night but only had 18 of their own as both teams repeatedly got bodies and sticks in the shooting lanes to thwart attempted drives.

The Phantoms had a great opportunity in the 3rd period to cut into a 3-1 deficit with back-to-back power plays but despite some good chances were unable to beat winning goalie Brad Thiessen.

Ryan Craig scored two minutes in the game on a deflection of a Robert Bortuzzo slapshot.

The second period began with Johan Backlund making a terrific save on a Tim Wallace breakaay to keep the Phantoms within a goal.

The game stayed 1-0 until late in the second period when Carl Sneep's center-point slapshot through traffic perhaps deflected off a Phantoms defenseman and past Backlund to make it 2-0.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton increased the lead to 3-0 early in the 3rd period on a Jesse Boulerice goal stemming from a Zach Sill cross-ice feed.

Less than two minutes later was Oskars Bartulis feeding the puck down to David Laliberte for his first of the season.

Nick Johnson closed the scoring after a Phantoms blocked shot took an unlucky bounce and landed on his stick on the backdoor.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 1-for-4 on the power play while Adirondack was 0-for-6.

On Saturday, October 30 the Phantoms host the Rochester Americans as the first 1,000 kids age 14 and younger received Phantoms silly wrist bands courtesy of Saratoga Spine. There will be a kids costume parade around the ice in the second intermission. And all the Phantoms will be appearing during a post-game open skate so remember to bring your skates and gloves and your pens and cameras for autographs and photos!
