Rampage Best In AHL After 5-2 Win Over Houston

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage move into the top spot in the AHL and extend their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 victory over the Houston Aeros on Friday night at the AT&T Center.

The scoring began just 27 seconds into the contest as Houston center Cody Almond gave the Aeros a 1-0 advantage. Almond received the puck in the slot from behind the net and fired a shot past San Antonio goaltender Matt Climie. Former Rampage player Jon DiSalvatore provided the assist.

Rampage center Tim Stapleton brought the score to 1-1 as he recorded San Antonio's first of three power-play goals at the 11:49 mark. Rampage defenseman Garrett Stafford passed from the slot to Stapleton above the left faceoff circle for a one-timer to the low stick side of Aeros netminder Matt Hackett to give Stapleton his fourth goal of the season.

Houston responded with a power-play goal at the 13:08 mark to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Defenseman Maxim Noreau received the puck in the slot and shot high to the stick side of Climie as it found the back of the net. Houston forwards Robbie Earl and Joel Broda were credited with the helpers.

With 13 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Rampage defenseman Michael Stone scored his first professional goal on the power play to tie the game 2-2. Stone fired a shot from the point that made its way through traffic and past Hackett's stick into the net. Alex Picard and Viktor Tikhonov registered the assists extending both of their point streaks to seven games. In addition, Tikhonov is currently on a six-game assist streak.

The Aeros outshot the Rampage 18-9 in the first period as San Antonio was unable to get a shot off until about six minutes into the game.

San Antonio captured the lead 7:35 into the second period as Tikhonov scored the Rampage's first shorthanded goal of the season. Hackett left the crease to clear the puck from behind the net leaving a wide open net for Tikhonov who intercepted the Houston clearing attempt and wrapped the puck around the net for the easy score making it a 3-2 game.

San Antonio extended their lead at the 11:36 mark of the middle stanza as Picard scored on the power play for his second point of the night. Right wing Matt Beaudoin sent a cross-ice pass to Picard who shot from the right faceoff circle and over the shoulder of Hackett to the upper left corner for a 4-2 score.

Beaudoin's assist extended his point streak to eight games which ties him for the longest current point streak in the league along with Hershey forwards Keith Aucoin and Andrew Gordon.

All four of the Rampage's goals in the first two periods were products of special teams.

Right wing Brett MacLean opened the scoring 36 seconds into the third period with his first even strength goal of the year and the team's first of the night. MacLean found a small gap between the left post and Hackett's skate to punch the puck in on his second opportunity finalizing the Rampage victory at 5-2. Boedker picked up his second assist of the night on MacLean's fourth goal of the season.

Climie recorded a season-high 41 saves on 43 shot attempts and is currently riding a four-game winning streak.

Hackett turned aside 29 of 34 Rampage shot attempts.

San Antonio now leads the league with a 7-2-1-0 record (15 points) and return to the ice on Wednesday evening when they host the Toronto Marlies at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
