October 29, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release
TONIGHT: The Barons play the fourth of a 5-game trip with their first visit to Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins, AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. OKC has won back-to-back games and is 2-1-0-0 on the current road swing after a Saturday loss in Toronto coupled with wins on Sunday in Hamilton and Wednesday in Chicago. The Barons and Griffins will meet 4 times this season, but do not match up again until March 11-12 in Oklahoma City. OKC is fourth in the West Division, 3 points back of first-place Peoria.
PENALTY KILLING AT THE TOP: The Barons' penalty kill foiled all 4 Chicago power plays on Wednesday, running OKC's season mark to 3 power play goals allowed in 50 times short, a league-best 94.0% success rate. OKC has killed 26 of 27 times shorthanded on the road. Over its last 9 games, the Barons have killed 42 of 43 opponents' power plays.
GIROUX HEATS UP: Alexandre Giroux, the AHL's leading goal scorer each of the past 2 seasons, is tied with several others for second in the league in goals with 6. Giroux has 3 goals in the last 2 games, including a pair of first-period tallies on Wednesday and the overtime game-winner on Sunday. Giroux, tied for fourth in the league in points with 11, has a pair of 2-goal games and paces the Barons with 4 multiple-point games.
BELLE-RINGER: Defenseman Shawn Belle has 3 assists in the past 2 games and is second on the Barons in points with 10 (1G, 9A), trailing Alexandre Giroux's 11. Belle is part of a multiple-way tie for eighth in the AHL in points. He's also tied for second in assists and shares the league lead (with Hamilton's Yannick Weber) in points by a defenseman.
STREAK TALK: Linus Omark has points in 6 of the last 7 games, totaling 8 points in that span. Liam Reddox has goals in 5 of his last 6 (5 goals) and points in 6 of the past 7 games (7 points) .
SHOT ODDITY: All 5 of OKC's wins have come in games where they were out-shot. OKC was out-shot 35-23 by Chicago on Wednesday. The Barons are 5-1-0-0 when out-shot, 0-2-1-0 when collecting more shots than the opponent and 0-1-0-0 when the shots are even. The Barons have been out-shot in 3 straight and 6 of their last 7, yet for the season have only been out-shot overall 303-294.
BUSY MONTH: The Barons have already played 10 games, currently tied for the league high with Peoria (idle tonight) and Abbotsford, which hosts Milwaukee. The Barons end their October schedule tomorrow with their 12th game. OKC has one other month (December) with 12 games and a pair of months (January and March) with 15. The others contain 11 or fewer games.
ROSTER NOTES: Defenseman Jake Taylor (upper body) is not on the trip. Taylor has not played since Oct. 15, missing the past 7 games. Winger Matt Marquardt was the healthy scratch on Wednesday at Chicago. Defenseman Jordan Bendfeld is on his second stint with the Barons, but has yet to dress for a game. Bendfeld played 1 game for ECHL Stockton this month.
