Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins fell to the Albany Devils 3-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,477 fans. The P-Bruins received both of their goals from forward Jordan Knackstedt and two assists from Joe Colborne.
The P-Bruins came out flying in the opening period, winning open-ice races and generating multiple quality scoring opportunities. Providence controlled the puck in the Albany zone and tested goalie Jeff Frazee with multiple quick shots from the slot. Despite dominating the play and out-shooting the Devils 14-6 in the period, Providence was held off the score-sheet. The only goal of the frame was scored by Brad Mills, who put Albany on the board at the 13:22 mark after beating Nolan Schaefer on a wrap-around. Pierre-Luc Leblond and Nick Palmieri picked up the assists on the play. Providence's best opportunity of the period came with under three minutes to play after a shot from Jeff LoVecchio took an odd bounce over Frazee's back and hit the crossbar.
The P-Bruins carried over the momentum from the first period into the second frame and were able to capitalize at the 3:59 mark. Knackstedt tallied his second goal of the season when he blanked Frazee with a shot in the low slot. Colborne assisted on the goal, his third of the season. The remainder of frame saw action in both ends of the ice with Schaefer and Frazee making big saves. P-Bruins tough-guy Nathan McIver and Mills exchanged some words and shoves behind Schaefer's net with under two minutes to play in the second. Mills was sent to the box with a double-minor penalty for spearing.
In the third period, the line of Knackstedt, Colborne and Levi Nelson continued to dominate play in the Albany zone and created multiple scoring opportunities. The line capitalized at the 3:51 mark of the period when Knackstedt found a loose puck in traffic in front of the net for his second goal of the game. Colborne picked up his second point of the game with the assist. Albany responded about four minutes later when Matt Anderson picked up Schaefer's rebound for a goal. Providence spent 1:21 down five-on-three off of consecutive delay of game calls, but was able to hold off Albany and go four-for-four on the penalty kill in the contest. Albany's Stephen Gionta put the Devils up 3-2 at the 11:37 mark with a slap shot from the top of the circle. Providence had a chance to send the game into overtime with a six-on-four opportunity with 10 seconds remaining in the frame, but couldn't find the puck in traffic.
Schaefer suffered the loss, stopping 21 of 24 shots, while Frazee blocked 30 of 32 attempts.
Providence gets back into action with a home-and-home series against the Worcester Sharks, beginning Saturday at the DCU Center at 1 p.m. and continuing at The Dunk on Sunday in a 1:05 p.m. match-up. Sunday is Poster Day with Halloween Posters free to the first 1,000 fans.
