Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-1 on the road to the Syracuse Crunch Friday.
Allan Rourke opened the scoring and gave the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season 4:22 into the first period off assists from Sean Bergenheim and Kevin Colley. It was a shorthanded goal, the team's fourth shortie of the year. However, The Crunch tied the score at 1-1 on their next power play as Ben Simon put a tough-angle rebound past Sound Tigers goaltender and Syracuse area native Chris Madden for his fifth goal of the season with 6:57 left in the opening frame off assists from Geoff Platt and Andy Delmore.
Syracuse took its first lead of the game when Madden had to wait for the puck to clear the no-play zone in the corner to his left but was beaten to it by Greg Mauldin who stabbed home his second goal of the year 18 seconds past the mid-point of the contest off assists from Andrew Murray and Darcy Verot to make it 2-1.
Crunch netminder Andrew Penner had a strong second period. Moments after he stopped Bergenheim on a breakaway, Penner forced Masi Marjamaki to shoot wide right on a penalty shot with 8:04 left in the frame. Syracuse then doubled its lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Joe Motzko, his third tally of the season, off an assist from Mark Hartigan with 2:30 left in the second period.
The Sound Tigers carried the play in the third period, holding a 17-7 shots on goal advantage, but could not solve Penner even after they pulled Madden in favor of an extra attacker during a four-on-four situation with just over a minute left to play. In fact, Simon iced the victory with an empty-net goal with 54.6 second left to play off an assist from Platt to make it 4-1.
Penner was the first star of the game with 37 saves as the Sound Tigers had a 38-36 shots on goal advantage, Simon was the second star and Motzko was the third. Madden made 32 saves in a losing effort. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 8 on the power play while Syracuse was 2 for 5.
The Sound Tigers will continue a stretch of four straight road games when they visit the Philadelphia Phantoms Saturday at 7:35 p.m. All Sound Tigers games are web-cast live at www.soundtigers.com. Fans can also watch all games live on the B2 Networks.
