HARTFORD, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 2-1 on the road Friday to the Hartford Wolf Pack who clinched the 2004-05 "Geico Connecticut Cup" with the victory.
Hartford led 1-0 after the first period on Alexandre Giroux's team-leading 24th goal of the season off an assist from Garth Murray 11:17 into the game. The teams then skated through a scoreless middle frame with the Wolf Pack holding a shots-on-goal advantage of 18-11 through 40 minutes.
The Sound Tigers tied the score at 1-1 on the team-leading 18th goal and 46th point of the season by Rob Collins who one-timed a loose puck from the point while on the power play for an unassisted marker 3:30 into the third period.
With 6:10 left to play, Sound Tigers goaltender Dieter Kochan robbed Hartford's Lawrence Nycholat from just above the crease, but six seconds after the ensuing face-off, Jeff Hamilton blasted home a slap-shot for his 20th goal of the season, and ninth game-winner, to make it 2-1 Wolf Pack at the 13:56 mark. Hamilton's goal was unassisted.
The Sound Tigers pulled Kochan in favor of an extra attacker with less then a minute to play and also took their timeout inside the final half-minute but could not score.
Hamilton was the first star of the game, Giroux the second and Collins the third. Kochan finished with 26 saves in a losing effort while Hartford's Jason LaBarbera made 21 as the Wolf Pack had a 28-22 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 4 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.
