Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â Lowell Lock Monsters goaltender Cam Ward made 17 saves in a 4-0 shutout of the Springfield Falcons at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday evening. Brian Eklund guarded the Falcons' net and made 30 stops on the night. It was the seventh of ten season meetings between the clubs, who will next meet on March 20 in Lowell.
Following a scoreless first period, the Lock Monsters converted their third power play of the game on a goal by defenseman Allan Rourke 2:07 in the second frame. Rourke wristed a shot from the high slot that found its way through traffic and past Eklund. It was his seventh goal of the season for the blue liner.
Lowell defenseman Mike Commodore made it 2-0 with a shot from the right point for a shorthanded goal at the 12:49 mark of the period.
Lock Monsters center Dustin Johner pounced on a loose puck at the bottom of the left wing circle and knocked it inside the far post for his first AHL goal 5:51 into the third period. Johner was called up to Lowell on March 3 after leading the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers in scoring through 51 games.
Left wing Justin Taylor capped scoring with 3:58 remaining to play with his seventh marker of the campaign. Taylor poked the puck past the Falcons defense at the Lowell blue line to create a breakaway which he finished with a backhander.
Springfield received four power plays in the game and killed off three of the four man advantages awarded to the Lock Monsters.
The Falcons are now 2-5-0-0 against Lowell this season.
The loss marked the 13th time this season that the Falcons have been shutout this season. The Norfolk Admirals hold the record for most times shutout in a season when they were blanked on 14 occasions last season.
It was the sixth shutout of the season for Ward who leads the AHL with a save percentage of .939.
The Falcons will visit the Manchester Monarchs at Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday in a 2:05 p.m. game. Following a Sunday's road game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Falcons will host the Hershey Bears on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. in their next home game at the Springfield Civic Center.
