Six-Run First Gives I-Cubs Second Win of Series

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (25-27) used a six-run first inning to beat the St. Paul Saints (23-29) by a score of 8-5, Saturday at Principal Park.

Iowa got six runs in the first inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Greg Deichmann and Narciso Crook. For Deichmann, it was his fourth straight game with a home run and his fifth in his last six games.

The Saints cut the lead in half with a three-run third inning, getting a two-run home run from Spencer Steer and an RBI single from Tim Beckham. They added a fourth run in the fifth inning when Beckham doubled, closing the line for Luke Farrell.

Farrell allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over his 4.1 innings. He was followed by Sean Newcomb and Brendon Little, who allowed just one earned run over their four combined innings.

The one run came on a solo shot from Alex Kirilloff to make it a 6-5 game. Iowa got a run back in the seventh and added two in the eighth on a home run from John Hicks and an RBI single from Trent Giambrone to grow their lead to 9-5.

Aneuris Rosario came in with one out in the ninth and recorded the final two outs both via strikeout, earning Iowa their second win of the series entering tomorrow's finale.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Greg Deichmann extended his hitting streak to six games with his second consecutive multi-hit game. The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs batted in and walk, hitting his fourth home run in as many games and his fifth in his last six games.

- John Hicks hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, giving him home runs in back-to-back games and three home runs in four games this series.

- Brendon Little spun 2.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing just one hit while striking out four. His 2.1 innings mark his longest outing since he threw 2.2 innings of relief for Double-A Tennessee on July 29 last season.
