June 4, 2022 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning by Travis Swaggerty gave the Indians a series-levelling victory over the Storm Chasers last night, 5-2. Omaha took an early 2-0 lead on solo home runs by Nate Eaton in the third inning and Clay Dungan in the fourth. Held scoreless through five innings, Swaggerty sparked Indy's offense with a leadoff double in the sixth inning. Three batters later, Bligh Madris laced a run-scoring double to left field to plate the Indians' first run. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Indianapolis needed just three plate appearances to turn its deficit into a two-run lead. Josh Bissonette worked a leadoff walk, and Oneil Cruz followed with an infield single to short. Swaggerty then rocketed a 1-0 offering over the wall in straightaway center to give Indy its first lead of the night. The Indians extended their lead in the ninth thanks to a Ji-hwan Bae single and Mason Martin RBI double.
QUALITY CHECK: Last night, Bryse Wilson became the second Indians starter to throw 7.0 innings this season, joining Chase De Jong who threw 7.0 shutout frames in Indianapolis' no-hitter on 4/13 at St. Paul. The two 7.0-inning outings by Indians pitchers this season have been the team's only two quality starts after they recorded 19 a year ago. Wilson's stellar outing last night earned him his second win in as many starts with the Indians, following a 6.0-inning outing on 5/28 at St. Paul in which he was one earned run away from a quality start. Wilson is in constant company with De Jong among Indians pitchers this season, with his eight strikeouts in his first start marking the second-most by an Indians pitcher in a single outing this season, following De Jong's nine punchouts during the no-no bid.
SWAGGERTY SWINGING: Travis Swaggerty launched his second home run in his last three games and recorded his fourth consecutive two-hit performance last night to launch the Indians ahead of the Storm Chasers for a win. The center fielder's first hit of the game came in the top of the sixth inning - a ground-rule double - and he came around to score Indy's first run of the game. A three-run homer over the center field wall then lifted the Indians from a 2-1 deficit to a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning. The two-hit effort was his sixth in his last seven games, extending his average to .414 (12-for-29) with six extra-base hits in that time span. Swaggerty has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games and owns a .397 average (25-for-63) with nine extra-base hits, 14 RBI and a 1.132 OPS since 5/17. His latest hot streak has improved his average in 35 games this season to .280 (37-for-132) with 11 extra-base hits and 22 RBI.
SWEET RELIEF: Bryse Wilson, Cam Vieaux and Austin Brice held the Storm Chasers without a hit following the fourth-inning solo home run to Clay Dungan last night. Vieaux and Brice combined to close out the game in the last two innings, surrendering two walks with Vieaux also recording a pair of strikeouts. In their last 9.0 innings, Indians relievers have not allowed an earned run and have only surrendered three hits.
ONEIL ON IT: After going hitless in his first game back from nursing a minor ankle injury, Oneil Cruz picked up where he left off with an infield single last night. The 6-foot-7 prospect has reached base safely in his last nine and has reached base safely in eight of those games since 5/22 vs. Toledo. In that time span, Cruz owns a .316 average (12-for-38) with four of his seven home runs this season, six RBI and a 1.027 OPS.
BLIGH GUY: Bligh Madris, who recorded a team and career-high 26-game on-base streak at the end of the 2021 season, has now reached base safely in his last 13 games since 5/20 vs. Toledo. With Travis Swaggerty on base following a ground-rule double, Madris roped a two-bagger to left field to cut Indy's deficit to one run. Since the beginning of his on-base streak, he has hit safely in 11 of 12 games with an official at-bat and is hitting .341 (14-for-41) with seven extra-base hits, a .460 on-base percentage and 1.119 OPS. From 8/26-10/3/21, Madris hit .320 (32-for-100) with 10 doubles and two home runs, a stretch which included a team-high 15-game hitting streak. He also finished the 2021 season tied with teammate Chris Sharpe for the most doubles by an Indians batter (25).
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to take a lead in the series against Omaha tonight at 8:05 PM ET at Werner Park. The Indians welcomed the Storm Chasers to Victory Field for Opening Week and went 4-2 in the six-game series. In 2021, the Omaha dominated Indianapolis at Werner Park and went 9-2 with a six-game sweep from 5/25-30. Since the beginning of 2021 - which was the first season where the two teams faced off against each other since 1997 and the American Association era - Indy has gone 9-15. Zach Matson will take the mound tonight for the Indians in just his second career start. For the Storm Chasers, Carlos Hernandez will make his first career start vs. Indianapolis.
MATSON ON THE MOUND: Southpaw Zach Matson will make his second start in 136 professional appearances tonight at Omaha. The 26-year-old made his first career start this season on 5/13 with Double-A Altoona vs. Somerset and surrendered one hit and one walk in 2.0 scoreless innings. He was promoted to Indianapolis on 5/24 and has since made two appearances with a 6.75 ERA (2er/2.2ip) after giving up a pair of runs in his first Triple-A outing. Matson was outstanding with Altoona, going 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA (3er/14.2ip) with 17 strikeouts in 11 total appearances. He also held right-handed batters to a .097 average (3-for-31) with 13 strikeouts.
THIS DATE IN 2005: In front of 11,000 fans at Victory Field, the Indians overcame a 2-0 and 6-2 deficit in a 9-6 walk-off win over Charlotte. Third baseman Jose Leon provided the heroics, belting a three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to finish 2-for-4 with six RBI. Left fielder Nate McLouth also finished 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored and stolen base.
