Bisons Trounce Rochester to Split Doubleheader

Buffalo Bisons News Release

ROCHESTER, NY - Making up for Wednesday night's rainout, the Buffalo Bisons and Rochester Red Wings split a doubleheader Saturday night from Frontier Field. The Herd dropped the first game 5-1, before coming back to take the nightcap 13-0.

Game one saw the Herd's offence stifled by the top pitching prospect in the Nationals organization, as Cade Cavalli went the distance by throwing seven innings of one-run ball while striking out 10.

Cavalli had a streak where he set down 14 consecutive batters, beginning after Nathan Lukes drove in the Bisons lone run of the game in the second.

Thomas Hatch went five innings for the Herd and was good for four of them, but a rough fourth inning saw five straight batters reach base off of four hits to put up a four-spot in the frame. Eric Yardley followed with a clean sixth, but the offence just couldn't figure out Cavalli.

Game two saw one of baseball's extreme rarities, when, in the top of the fourth, Lukes delivered an inside-the-park grand slam to break the scoring and put the Herd up 4-0. It was the Bisons' first inside-the-park home run since Ryan Goins did it back on May 29, 2013.

The Herd continued to mash in the fifth, scoring another four runs off five hits including doubles from Cullen Large, Stevie Berman, and Eric Stamets to knock out Wings starter Logan Verrett who was charged with all eight runs.

The Bisons would tack on two more in the sixth thanks to a costly error by Richard Ureña that allowed Gabriel Moreno and Cullen Large to score. The onslaught continued into the seventh, when a Moreno sac fly followed by a two-run double by Large brought another three runs across to make it 13-0.

Not to be overshadowed by the offence, Casey Lawrence continued his excellent season with his best outing of the season. Lawrence was just one single removed from a perfect, albeit seven-inning, game as he threw a complete game shutout and allowed just one hit. He struck out five, didn't walk a batter, and did so on just 81 pitches to lower his ERA to a sterling 2.00 on the year.

The Bisons and Red Wings will conclude their six-game set tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. EST before enjoying an off day on Monday.
