Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (28-25) shut out the Nashville Sounds (34-19) 5-0 on Saturday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, welcoming a paid attendance of 9,032. With the win, Durham clinched at least a share of their fourth consecutive series and secured their second shutout win of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Durham struck first in the second after SS Tristan Gray went yard on a two-run shot. The Bulls would add two more runs in the seventh as C Joe Hudson went deep with a two-run shot of his own for the 4-0 lead. DH Rene Pinto later drove in an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth for a 5-0 lead.
The storyline of the game was pitching as Bulls starting pitcher Josh Fleming threw six innings, allowing five hits and ringing up a career-high 10 strikeouts. Fleming's 10 strikeouts were the most by a Bulls pitcher since Tommy Romero had 13 strikeouts on September 10th against the Norfolk Tides.
Bulls' reliever Luke Bard picked up right where Fleming left off, throwing two innings and allowing one hit while ringing up three strikeouts. Dusten Knight came on in the ninth, allowing one hit while striking out two to secure the shutout.
Fleming earned the win to remain undefeated at 5-0 for Durham on the season. Sounds starter Alec Bettinger picked up the loss.
The Bulls and Sounds will complete their series on Sunday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. RHP Shane Baz (0-0, 1.04) is expected to start for Durham as part of an MLB Rehab Assignment and RHP Dylan File (2-1, 3.86) is expected to get the starting nod for Nashville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
