Knights Drop Saturday's Game to Redbirds 4-3

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Tyler O'Neil's ninth-inning home run led the Memphis Redbirds to a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Knights on Saturday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,403 fans at Truist Field. With the loss, the Knights have dropped four of five games in the series.

The Redbirds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a home run from left fielder Connor Capel. The Knights came right back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1 thanks to an RBI single from Yermín Mercedes. Three innings later, the Redbirds regained the lead on an RBI single by Luken Baker.

In the top of the seventh inning, Capel added to the Memphis lead with an RBI triple. With the Redbirds now ahead by a score of 3-1, Charlotte center fielder Adam Haseley changed the game with one swing of the bat. Haseley drove home two runs on a single, which tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the ninth, O'Neil, who is on a major league rehab assignment from the St. Louis Cardinals, homered off Charlotte reliever Yoan Aybar (0-1, 5.40) to give the Redbirds a 4-3 lead and ultimately the game five victory. Aybar was saddled with the loss.

Charlotte RHP Brody Koerner started for the Knights and allowed just two runs on five hits over four innings of work. LHP Steven Moyers, who was promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham on Friday, made his Knights debut. He allowed just one hit over 2.1 shutout innings.

The Knights will conclude the series against the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals) on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. game from Uptown Charlotte. The game can also be heard live on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
