Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - Despite starting out with league's best record at 3-0, the Bakersfield Condors continued to adjust their lineup by making two moves. Physical winger Dennis Sharyaev comes to the team from the Louisiana IceGators in exchange for cash considerations. The Condors also traded RW Jon Mirasty to the Greenville Grrrowl for the rights to D Jonathan Zion.

Shiryaev, 26, enters his sixth season as a pro, and brings 251 games, 83 points and 1,005 penalty minutes to the roster. A favorite of IceGators fans for the last three seasons, he had his best offensive season last year, contributing 11 goals and 26 points in just 42 games. He missed time with a bicep tear that sidelined him for 30 games. He added 257 penalty minutes during the regular season. In the playoffs he was strong, with five points and 20 PIM in just nine games. He is expected to join the team this week.

Zion, 23, has played two seasons as a professional, skating in 36 ECHL games last season and registering 31 points. He also appeared in 19 American Hockey League games with Manchester and Syracuse, putting up a pair of assists. As a rookie during the 2002-03 campaign, the Nepean, Ontario native notched 52 points in 58 games. The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Zion with the 110th pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (fourth round). He has been in the AHL all season, and has dressed for two games as a member of the Utah Grizzlies. Should he be returned to the ECHL he will play for Bakersfield.

"Jon Mirasty has been a good player for the Condors," said Head Coach Marty Raymond. "But this season he did not fit in with the group we have. We're looking more for a full time player that has toughness and I think Dennis fits the mold. Furthermore, the chance came to get a great player like Jonathan Zion and that's a plus for us, when he does come down and join our team."

The first-place Bakersfield Condors are off for the next eight days, but return to the ice on Tuesday, November 2nd to host the Alaska Aces at 7:00 p.m. The Aces made waves today with the signing of NHL All-Star Scott Gomez, who is expected to be in their lineup when they arrive in town for next week's game. That game is the Election Day Gala, featuring a politician look-a-like contest.
