Columbia Inferno News Release
LAST WEEK
Friday, October 22nd SOUTH CAROLINA 3 Columbia 2 (OT)
The Columbia Inferno broke their opening game winning streak as they drop to the South Carolina Stingrays in overtime 3-2 in front of a 6,231 crowd. The Stingrays scored first with a goal by Rich Peverley at 2:58 of the first period. Columbia's Chanse Fitzpatrick tied the game at 14:06 with help from rookie Ryan Campbell. After a scoreless second period, Matt Ulwelling passed the puck to Steve Burgess off the face-off. Burgess took a slapshot from the blueline and scored to give the Inferno the go-ahead goal at 7:17. The Stingrays didn't back down as they scored at 7:50 to tie the game at two with a goal by Marty Clapton. With 3:49 left in the overtime period, Joe Tenute scored the game-winning goal as the Stingrays win their first game of the season.
Saturday, October 23rd GWINNETT 4 Columbia 3 (SO)
Alex Burrows scored two goals and had one assist but the Inferno couldn't hold on in a shootout as they lost to the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3. Gwinnett quickly went on the board at 1:04 of the first period with a goal by Jeff Campbell. Burrows scored his first goal of the night at 8:06 with passes from Brad Ralph and Erik Eaton to tie the game. It was all Gwinnett in the second period as they scored two goals to go ahead 3-1. The Inferno came alive in the third period as Bryson Busniuk scores his first goal of the season at 7:38 with a pass from Burrows to bring Columbia to within one goal. With the Inferno goalie pulled for the man-advantage, Burrows scores his second goal of the night at 18:51 to tie the game. Three penalties in the overtime period crippled the Inferno as they skated 5-on-3 for 1:03 but McVicar stopped all 6 shots to push the game to a shootout. Columbia could not score during the shootout on four shooters as Gwinnett scored one out of four to win their second game in a row.
