Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release

ATLANTIC CITY - WEEK RECORD: 1-1-0 - SEASON RECORD: 1-1-0 - T-5th NORTH DIVISION

BULLIES REWIND: The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies opened the 2004-05 ECHL regular season away from Historic Boardwalk Hall by splitting a pair of games over the weekend with Pee Dee Pride and the Greenville Grrrowl. The Bullies open up the home portion of their 2004-05 schedule at 7:05PM this Friday against the Trenton Titans.

Friday, Pee Dee's Brian Collins scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at 7:04 of the third period to give the Pee Dee Pride a 3-2 victory over the Bullies before 4840 at the Florence City-County Civic Center in ECHL action on Friday. Pee Dee opened the scoring at 12:29 of the first period when Kyle Kidney slapped Darryl Green's rebound by Bullies goaltender Jake Moreland for a 1-0 lead. The Bullies would counter with two goals in a span of 14 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. First, Brad Both redirected Eric Nelson's shot past Pee Dee goaltender Sebastien Laplante at 5:58 of the second period to tie the score at 1-1. Brett Nowak gave the Bullies a 2-1 lead just 14 seconds later when he took a cross-ice feed from Luke Curtin at the right-wing circle and fired a shot past Laplante at 6:12. Pee Dee would come back with the equalizer at 16:21 of the second as Kidney netted his second goal of the night with a shot past Adam Munro in replace of Jake Moreland from the right wing circle to tie the game 2-2 after two periods setting up the game-winner by Collins. Moreland left the game midway through the second period with an undisclosed injury. Pee Dee out-shot the Bullies 28-23. Atlantic City went 0-4 on the power play. Munro made 17 saves in the loss.

Saturday, Luke Curtin and Brett Nowak each recorded a goal and an assist and goaltender Adam Munro stopped 29 shots to lead the Boardwalk Bullies to a 3-2 win over the Greenville Grrrowl before 3836 at the Bi-Lo Center in ECHL action on Saturday. Nowak opened the scoring for Atlantic City at 15:17 of the first period on the power play when he collected Curtin's rebound in the slot and slapped the puck past Greenville goaltender Mike Brodeur for a 1-0 lead. Just 2:09 later, Curtin notched his first goal of the year when he took a cross-ice feed from Ian Walterson at the left-wing circle and fired a slap shot over the left shoulder of Brodeur at 17:26 to give the Bullies a 2-0 advantage at the end of one period. Jason Notermann gave the Bullies a 3-0 lead with a power play goal at 7:50 of the second period, taking a feed from Nowak across the crease and tucking the puck underneath Brodeur. The Grrrowl would crack the scoreboard before the end of the period. Alex Kojevnikov fired a slap shot from the right wing circle over the shoulder of Bullies goaltender Adam Munro at 18:35 on the power play to bring Greenville back to within two goals at 3-1. In the third, the Grrrowl took advantage of another power play as Richard Pitirri tapped a loose puck by Munro at 2:57 of the period to bring Greenville within a goal at 3-2, but the Grrrowl wouldn't score again. Atlantic City out-shot Greenville 36-31. The Bullies went 2-4 on the power play. Munro stopped 29 shots for his first win in a Bullies uniform.

BULLIES "TOP DAWG" AWARD: Each Monday from now until the end of the season, Public Relations and Broadcasting Manager Dan Weiss will select the Bullies "Top Dawg" for the week. This week's winner is newcomer Brett Nowak, who notched two goals and an assist to lead the Bullies in scoring after one weekend. Nowak played 55 games last season for Providence of the American Hockey League and is a former 4th round draft choice of the Boston Bruins. Honorable mention goes out to goaltender Adam Munro who came on in relief of Jake Moreland on Friday and stopped 29 shots on Saturday to lead the Bullies to their first win of the year.

BIZARRO OPENING NIGHT: For just the first time since relocating to Atlantic City, the Bullies opened the regular season on the road, and for just the first time as well, lost on opening night when they fell to the Pee Dee Pride 3-2. In their three previous seasons in Atlantic City, the Bullies defeated Johnstown, Roanoke, and Texas all at Boardwalk Hall on opening night.

ENFORCER TURNED GOAL SCORER? Bullies forward Brad Both began his 5th professional season on Friday with more than 56 times the number of penalty minutes than goals scored in his career (1,014 penalty minutes to 18 goals), but the Barwick, ON native inked his name in the Bullies record books when he notched Atlantic City's first goal of the 2004-05 season, deflecting defenseman Eric Nelson's shot from the blue line. Both did not even record the first fighting major of the year as that honor went to defenseman Vince Macri.

HAIL TO THE CHIEF: Forward Jason Notermann joined the Bullies just three hours prior to the season opener on Friday in Florence, SC, but the former Johnstown Chief and 2004 ECHL All-Star made an immediate impact by creating several scoring chances in Friday's defeat and notching the game-winning goal on the power play in Saturday's win at Greenville. Notermann finished 11th among ECHL rookies in scoring last season with 25 goals and 54 points in 69 games.

BULLIES SUCCESS CONTINUES: Of the six returning Bullies skaters from last season's record-breaking squad, five of them tallied at least one point during opening weekend. Forward Luke Curtin, coming off a career year in which he set personal bests in goals, assists, and points, led the charge of the returning Bullies with a goal and two assists.
