
Sharks Call Up Carkner

CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has recalled defenseman Matt Carkner from the Cleveland Barons.
Carkner has recorded a career-best eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points and 112 penalty minutes in 46 games for the Barons this season. Carkner ranks third among Barons defensemen in scoring and is tied for eighth among AHL defensemen goal leaders.
Carkner, who served as the Barons captain for the 04-05 season, contributed 10 points (assists) and led the team with 192 penalty minutes in 73 games in 2004-05. He was named the Barons American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year for the second consecutive season.
During the 2003-04 campaign, Carkner recorded two goals and 11 assists for 13 total points and a plus-18 plus/minus rating. He finished third in the AHL postseason with 39 penalty minutes and he assisted on the game-winning goal in the deciding game three of the North Division Qualifying Round. He was also selected as the Barons American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the community.
Carkner's contributions to the Barons have been well documented. He leads the franchise in games played (292) and penalty minutes (858). Carkner's philanthropic work includes his annual "Carkner's Christmas" program, "Clip Carkner's Curls for Cancer", and his work with the Doug Dieken Foundation.
The six-foot-four, 230-pound defenseman from Winchester, Ontario was originally signed by San Jose as a free agent on June 7, 2001.
The Barons nine game home stand continues with games Thursday and Friday night at 7pm. Thursday features a pivotal North Division match up against the Toronto Marlies. Friday the Barons take on the Chicago Wolves. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a free authentically autographed Garrett Stafford action photo.
