February 6, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Senators split their two games against the Admirals in Norfolk and remain in sixth place in the East Division.
FRIDAY, FEB. 3RD @ NORFOLK (4-6 L): Left wing DENIS HAMEL registered his second hat trick of the season, and fourth as a Senator, but it was not enough for Binghamton to snap a six-game slide against the Admirals dating back to the final meeting of the 2004-05 season. Norfolk opened a 2-0 lead in the first period with the first goal coming off the stick of JASON MORGAN only 22 seconds into the game. Hamel then tied the game with two goals less than three minutes apart. But Norfolk finished the first period with two more goals and Binghamton goaltender KELLY GUARD gave way to BILLY THOMPSON to start the second period. Winger MATT KEITH scored less than two minutes into the middle period to give Norfolk their largest lead at 5-2. But Binghamton closed the lead to one as CHARLIE STEPHENS scored his 14th goal of the season and HAMEL completed the hat trick early in the third period. Norfolk scored its final goal into an empty net with less than one minute remaining in the game. Norfolk outshot Binghamton 46 to 26 in the game. The Sens converted on one of six power plays while the Admirals were able to convert on three of 10 chances. Norfolk goalie MIKE McKENNA stopped 22 of 26 shots while THOMPSON made 24 saves on 25 shots in relief of GUARD.
SATURDAY, FEB. 4TH @ NORFOLK (2-1 W): Binghamton snapped a six-game losing streak on Saturday as they defeated the Admirals 2-1 behind a two-point night from BRANDON BOCHENSKI (1 goal, 1 assist) and superb goaltending from BILLY THOMPSON. THOMPSON stopped 22 of 23 shots and was named the game's first star. DENIS HAMEL had the other goal for Binghamton. The Senators allowed the first goal for the ninth time in the last 10 games when NATHAN BARRETT scored his 18th goal of the season. HAMEL then scored his 31st goal of the season to tie the game and BOCHENSKI scored his first goal in five games since being assigned from Ottawa to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish. All three goals in the game were scored on the power play as Binghamton converted on two of 11 chances and Norfolk scored on one of 13 tries.
