Sharks Assign Toskala on a Conditioning Assignment; Recall Murray

CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has assigned goaltender Vesa Toskala to the Cleveland Barons on a conditioning assignment and recalled defenseman Doug Murray from the Cleveland Barons.

Toskala re-aggravated a groin injury on November 8 at Colorado and was placed on injured reserve the following day. The 28-year-old Toskala has appeared in five games this season for the Sharks and owns a 5.05 goals-against-average.

Toskala was originally selected by San Jose in the fourth round (90th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

Murray has earned eight points (1-7-8) and 37 penalty minutes in 20 games with the Barons this season. The native of Bromma, Sweden is in his third year in Cleveland and this will be his first time being called up to the NHL. He had the best season of his career last year with the Barons, scoring six goals and 17 assists (35 points) in 54 games.

In his rookie year with the Barons, he earned 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points and registered 75 penalty minutes. He led team defenseman in power play goals (tie - 5), first goals (4) and led team defenseman and ranked 5th among AHL defenseman in shooting percentage (.096). He also led Barons defenseman and tied among AHL defenseman and AHL rookies with three power play goals during the postseason.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Murray was drafted by San Jose in the 8th round (241st overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
