Seven Different Players Score Goals in Win

Wilkes-Barre, Pa (Thursday, October 7, 2004) – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins improved to 3-0 in the preseason as they defeated the Syracuse Crunch, 8-1, before a crowd of 6,442 on Thursday at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins had a balanced scoring attack as seven different players scored goals in the win. Colby Armstrong led the way with a goal and three assists and Shane Endicott added two goals and one assist.

The Penguins, who have outscored their opponent 13-3 in the last two games, had five players record two or more points on the night. Maxime Talbot and Alain Nasreddine each recorded a goal and an assist, while rookie Erik Christensen collected two assists for the second straight game.

After successfully killing off three straight Syracuse power play attempts in the first period, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead on Alain Nasreddine's goal late in the period. Nasreddine beat goaltender Pascal Leclaire for his first goal of the preseason at 15:39.

In the second period, the Penguins broke the game open with four goals in a span of 11:21 to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Early in the period, the Armstrong scored his first goal of the preseason at 3:24 and Cam Paddock followed a few minutes later with a power play goal at 6:40 to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.

Later in the period, Kris Beech and Ramzi Abid scored a little over a minute apart to give the Pens' a 5-0 lead. Beech scored a power play goal at 13:21 and Abid scored his second goal of the preseason 1:17 later at 14:38.

After killing off a 5-on-3 power play to start the third period, the Penguins increased their lead to 6-0 as Endicott notched his second goal of the preseason 3:24 into the period. Syracuse broke up Marc-Andre Fleury's shutout bid midway through the period as Tyler Sloan scored a power play goal at 11:13.

With five minutes left in the game, Talbot scored a short-handed goal and Shane Endicott closed out the scoring with his second goal of the game and third of the preseason at 17:55 to make it 8-1.

Fleury, who made his first start of the preseason, stopped 19 of 20 shots to record the win, while Leclaire made 18 saves in a losing effort.

The Penguins scored two power play goals on six chances, while Syracuse was one for ten on the power play. In three games, the Penguins have killed off 19 of 20 power play attempts.

The Penguins close out their five-game preseason schedule this weekend with two games against the Binghamton Senators. The Penguins will visit Binghamton tomorrow night and then will return home to host the Senators in their preseason finale on Saturday at Wachovia Arena.

GAME NOTES

In two preseason games, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has stopped 34 of 36 shots ... Fleury has a record of 1-0 and a 1.34 goals against average ... He is expected to start tomorrow night at Binghamton ... Shane Endicott, Erik Christensen and Colby Armstrong lead the team in preseason scoring with four points each ... Endicott has three goals and one assist in two games, while Christensen has recorded four assists in the last two games ... Endicott leads the team in goals and Christensen leads in assists.
