October 8, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Edmonton Road Runners News Release
Boise, Idaho - The Grizzlies and Road Runners each had plenty of opportunity to practice special teams on Friday night in Boise, Idaho but it was the Grizzlies who took advantage notching three power play goals in a 3-0 shutout over Edmonton. Kiel McLeod had a goal and an assist and defensemen Keith Ballard and Peter Metcalf each notched goals in the Grizzlies win. Jean-Marc Pelletier made 23 saves earning the victory for Utah who outshot the Road Runners 32-23.
The Grizzlies got on the board on their third power play attempt at the 10:52 mark of the first period when rookie Jakub Koreis dropped a pass back to the high slot area where Metcalf slapped a shot past Edmonton goaltender Mike Morrison. Koreis and Fredrik Sjostrom drew the assists on the power play goal. Utah outshot the Road Runners 10-5 in the period due in large part to a 4-2 power play advantage.
The Grizzlies started the second period on the man advantage and just six seconds into the frame had a two-man advantage that they capitalized on when Ballard blasted a shot past Morrison giving Utah a 2-0 lead. McLeod and Jeff Taffe had the assists at :54 of the second period. Just one second after another 5-on-3 power play expired the Grizzlies scored their third power play goal of the game when McLeod knocked a bouncing puck down at the side of the net and pushed it by the second Road Runner goalie of the night, Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, lifting the Grizzlies to a 3-0 lead after two period and providing the knockout punch. The Grizzlies were outshot in the period 11-9 but still held a 19-16 two period lead in shots.
No scoring occurred in the third period but there was plenty of skirmishes after the whistles leading to what should be an interesting sequel tomorrow night. The Grizzlies outshot the Road Runners 14-7 in the period and thwarted all three Edmonton power plays.
The Grizzlies finished the night 3 for 9 on the power play and the Road Runners were 0 for 9.
The Grizzlies and Road Runners will meet again tomorrow night in the BOA Centre in the re-match.
