October 8, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
The Sens held their second home preseason contest in front of 1,565 fans at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night as the welcomed the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins to town.
In a game that was dominated by penalties, 211 combined penalty minutes, special teams were the name of the game. Seven of the ten goals were scored on either the power play or shorthanded, along with one penalty shot goal. The Senators escaped with a 6-4 victory, tying them with the Penguins for the I-81 Puck Cup lead. The two teams will meet Saturday night at the Wachovia Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA and the winner of that game will claim the inaugural I-81 Puck Cup championship.
Brian Pothier got the scoring going early for Binghamton's power play, beating last year's number one overall pick, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, low on the catching glove side, at 1:52 of the first period. The Penguins tied the game 1:03 later on a Kenny Corupe penalty shot, after he was taken down on a breakaway by Sens blueliner Jan Platil.
Denis Hamel put the Sens back out front with an unassisted short handed marker at 6:41 of the first. Once again Wilkes-Barre/Scranton answered with a Tomas Surovy power play tally. Rookie Grant Potulny put the Sens up 3-2 heading into the dressing rooms when he capitalized on a Antoine Vermette pass with :12 left in the opening frame.
The games third star, Colby Armstrong, got the Penguins going, tying the game at 3, with a power play goal at 2:57 of the second period. First-year pro Brandon Bochenski put his name on the score sheet at 7:56 of the second on another power play goal that put the Sens back on top 4-3. Denis Hamel extended the Senators lead with a goal at the 10:24 point of the second, once again a power play notch. That goal would stand to be the eventual game winner.
Bochenski put the Sens up 6-3 at 6:27 of the final frame, putting home his second tally of the evening on a pass from Brian Pothier. The Penguins got a lucky bounce to pull within two when defenseman Chris Kelleher dumped the puck from beyond the blue line. Sens goaltender Billy Thompson tried to stop the puck to the right of net, but the puck took an ugly bounce, went off of Thompson's right leg, through his legs and into the open net. That was as close as the Pens would come however.
The Sens finished the game 3 for 16 with the man advantage. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 2 for 15. Billy Thompson went the distance in between the pipes for Binghamton turning away 29 of 33 shots. Marc-Andre Fleury and Andy Chiodo split time in the net for the Penguins with Fleury making 14 saves on 18 shots. Chiodo closed out the game for the Penguins stopping 12 of 14 shots.
Tune into 680 WINR at 6:45 on Saturday night for the Countdown to Faceoff , with the voice of the Senators, Grady Whittenburg.
