P-Bruins fall to Portland in pre-season action

The Providence Bruins continued their 2004 pre-season slate of games on Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine, falling 3-2 to the Pirates in a hard-fought battle. The Bruins outshot Portland, 40-33 in the contest.

Bruin centers Kris Vernarsky and Jeff Daw scored the Providence goals, the first of the pre-season for each player. Left wing Derek Bekar assisted on Daw's goal, while Vernarsky's was an unassisted tally.

Goaltender Peter Hamerlik played the whole game, stopping 30 of the 33 shots he faced in his first pre-season action.

Patrice Bergeron, Andy Hilbert, Carl Corazzini, Ben Guite, Brent Thompson and Jay Henderson all suited up for the Black and Gold in their first pre-season game.

The Black and Gold concludes the pre-season schedule with a home-and-home series against the Springfield Falcons beginning on Saturday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Olympia Ice Rink in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The teams wrap up the pre-season on Sunday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bridgewater (Massachusetts) Ice Arena. For ticket information for the game at Bridgewater, please call (508) 279-0600.
