Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White today confirmed that Iowa Stars Defenseman Mario Scalzo has been selected by Hockey Canada to represent Team Canada at the 2006 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland from December 26th to 31st.
In his second season as a professional, Scalzo currently has one goal, 10 assists and 38 penalty minutes in 28 games with Iowa this season: 28(1/10/11)38. In 74 games last season, the St-Hubert, Quebec-native had four goals, 29 assists, 42 PIM's and a 'plus 9' rating for the Stars: 74(4/29/33)+9. His 29 assists had him tied for first among all Iowa blueliners and was third overall on the Stars.
"To be selected for any Team Canada roster is a great accomplishment for Mario. While we will miss him in Des Moines for a few games, both the team and I are happy for him and the international exposure this tournament carries with it", commented Scott White, the Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations.
The Spengler Cup is the oldest continual club tournament in the world dating back to 1923. The Canadian National Men's Team has competed at the event since 1984 and has won 10 titles during that period. Canada last won the Spengler Cup in 2003 and finished second at last year's tournament.
Team Canada will open the Spengler Cup on December 26th against Mora IK (Sweden) at 2:15 PM ET, a game that can be seen on all Rogers Sportsnet stations. The tournament will run through December 31st. All of Canada's games will be on Rogers Sportsnet.
A veteran of 19 seasons behind an NHL bench, Pat Quinn will lead this year's club. "Experience counts at any international tournament and the Spengler Cup is no different," said Quinn in a Hockey Canada press release. "Team Canada is made up of a lot of players who know what it takes to win on the international stage. I'm confident with this group that we'll be able to represent the country well over the holidays."
