Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced early this afternoon that the Iowa Stars have signed Defenseman Matt DeMarchi (duh-MAR-key). Keeping with club policy, terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

The 25-year-old DeMarchi comes to the Iowa Stars after beginning the 2006-07 season with EHC Straubing in Germany and then with Sibir Novosibirsk in the Russian Super League.

A native of Bemidji, Minnesota, the left-handed blueliner began his professional career with the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League, playing 169 career games with the New York-based New Jersey Devils affiliate. He had seven goals, 27 assists and 235 penalty minutes with the River Rats: 169(7/27/34)235. Prior to playing for Albany, the 6-3, 190-pounder enjoyed a four-year career with the University of Minnesota, posting 48 points in 158 games for the Gophers: 158(16/32/48)158.

He also played in 87 games for the now-defunct North Iowa Huskies (USHL) from 1997-1999. The Huskies relocated to Cedar Rapids for the 1999-2000 season.

DeMarchi was New Jersey's second round selection, 57th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
