Reading Royals News Release
Toledo, OH - Despite outshooting the Toledo Storm 40-29 on Sunday, the Reading Royals (4-1-1=9) were defeated for the first time in regulation in the 2005-06 season. This game marked the first time since the season opening game against the Johnstown Chiefs that the Royals trailed in a hockey game, as Toledo got on the board first and then scored a third period power play goal to break a one-one deadlock and held on for the 2-1 win, despite a relentless attack by the Royals on Storm goaltender, David Cann.
The Storm picked up their first goal at 7:32 of the first period on their initial power play opportunity of the day, when defenseman Gerry Burke took a shot from the high slot that hit a body in front and fluttered past the screened Royal goaltender, Yutaka Fukufuji (1-1-1). The Royals got one of their own on the power play at the 6:17 mark of the second period when Mike Kompon scored his second goal in as many nights with a hard wrap and stuff from behind the Storm net.
The teams entered the third period tied at one, and the Storm got all they would need with a power play goal 7:18 into the final period. A shot from the point by P.J. Martin was stopped but resulted in a mad scramble out in front of Fukufuji, and the Storm's Todd Jackson was able to slip one under the Royal netminder to give Toledo the 2-1 lead. The Royals turned up the heat on the Storm and Cann down the stretch, but could not find paydirt, as Reading found itself outscored in the third period for the fifth time in six games this year.
Next up for the Storm is a Wednesday night match up with the defending Kelly Cup champion, Trenton Titans, at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton (7:00 pm). The Royals return home to the Sovereign Center in Reading on Friday night against the Dayton Bombers (7:00 pm). That night, the Royals will give away magnetic schedules courtesy of Papa John's Pizza. On Saturday night, the Royals are at home again against the Bombers (7:00 pm). On that night, the Royals will give away the first in a series of five pint glasses in honor of the team's fifth anniversary season courtesy of Labatt's Blue and All-Star Distributing. All of the Royals games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1240 am and on the internet at www.royalshockey.com with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before the opening faceoff.
