January 16, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals scored the first three goals of the game as they dropped the Kelowna Rockets 4-3 on Friday night in a battle between two of the top teams in the Western Conference.
The Royals applied pressure on the Rockets throughout the contest to create multiple scoring chances, and were rewarded with three goals in the opening two periods. Victoria's Matthew Phillips capped off a three point night (1g-2a), that saw him earn first star honours, with the game winner in the final frame. The Royals' Alex Forsberg opened the scoring in the first period and added his second of the night in the middle stanza when he received a cross-crease pass from Phillips. Tyler Soy would tally the Royals other goal in the second period.
Kelowna, who showed why they are the top team in the WHL, battled back to cut the Royals' lead with three markers from Tanner Wishnowski, Calvin Thurkauf and Nick Merkley in the third frame, but Victoria would earn the win by shutting the door in the final three minutes of play.
The Royals' defence, led by goaltender Griffen Outhouse stopped 30 of the Rockets' 33 shots throughout the game. Kelowna netminder Herringer made 32 saves on the 36 pucks he faced.
