Oil Kings Lose in Overtime to Hitmen

January 16, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings received some stellar goaltending from Payton Lee and secondary scoring with goals from Davis Koch and Anatolii Elizarov but for the second time in a week lost to the Calgary Hitmen in overtime Saturday night by a 3-2 score.

The Oil Kings were pelted with shots as Calgary fired 41 at Lee, who stopped 38, but Jake Bean banged in his own rebound on a 3-on-1 in overtime on an apparent missed-call from the refs sending Edmonton home with just a single point.

Koch got the road team on the board scoring his third at 15:12 of the first being set up by Dario Meyer, who collected his first point since returning from the 2016 World Junior Championship.

The big Russian, Elizarov, scored his second of the year when he fired one at the net, which deflected off a Hitmen defenceman and just over Cody Porter. Lane Bauer and Andrew Koep were credited with the helpers. Koep was moved up to the top line with Bauer and Brett Pollock to replace captain Brandon Baddock who was ineligible to play as the WHL is taking a closer look at his check from behind on Medicine Hat's David Quenneville Friday night.

The Hitmen spent the majority of the third period in Edmonton's zone finally solving Lee with just over three minutes left in the game when Jackson Houck took a back door feed from Jakob Stukel and tapped it into the net.

Overtime brought about two unbelievable chances; one for each team. Jordy Stallard took a saucer pass from Stukel and Lee slid across trapping it in his pads and then seconds later Dario Meyer sprung loose on a breakaway and fired it off the crossbar. It was Bean who sent the Calgary fans home happy though when he put in his own rebound after his goalie, Porter, tripped Tyler Robertson allowing the Hitmen to come in with a 3-on-1.

The Oil Kings had outshot opposing teams by a wide margin of 157 in the previous 10 games but were unable to penetrate much offense getting only 18 shots at Porter and only two in the final period.

Lee, the game's first star, made several outstanding stops including two second period highlight reel saves on a Hitmen breakaway and rebound, kicking his toe out to keep the game at 2-1. And then with 59 seconds left in the third he robbed Houck on a one-timer to keep the game tied.

The Oil Kings will play their third game in three nights Sunday at a special 6pm start time when they host the Kamloops Blazers at Rexall Place.
