Regina Pats News Release

Seattle, Washington - The Regina Pats (19-20-3-3) opened the final weekend of their U.S. Division road trip against the Seattle Thunderbirds (24-15-3-0). The Thunderbirds scored three powerplay goals as the Pats fell 4-2.

It only took a couple minutes for the Thunderbirds to write themselves onto the scoresheet. With the hosts on the powerplay, Matt Barzal and Ryan Gropp put together a great passing play to set up Keegan Kolesar for the back door tap-in. Shortly after the goal, Luc Smith and Luke Osterman shed the gloves in the Pats zone and went blow for blow in a prolonged bout. Offence was tough to come by the rest of the way with the Thunderbirds outshooting the Pats 6-5 after the goal for a first period total of 11-5. Jordan Hollett stopped ten of the shots he faced to get the Pats to the break-down 1-0.

The Blue and White got rolling four minutes into the period when Luc Smith banged in a Liam Schioler rebound to get the Pats on the board. Ryan Gropp broke the tie at 9:17, jamming an Alexander True rebound to the back of the net, giving Seattle a 2-1 lead. The Thrunderbirds powerplay struck again in the period when Gropp got room to drag and fire a wrister to the top of the net with 43 seconds left. Seattle carried a 3-1 lead to the third on the strength of three powerplay goals.

Seattle added some more insurance 6:45 into the third when Donovan Neuls tipped an Ethan Bear point shot past Jordan Hollett. That marker brought Tyler Brown into the game for his first action since January 3 against Prince Albert. The change sparked the Pats and the fourth line picked up its second goal of the night. Sean Richards wrapped the puck around, but was foiled by Landon Bow. The rookie grabbed the puck out of an ensuing scrum, faked a similar move before picking a backhand to the top of the Seattle goal in spectacular fashion. The Pats continued to press, outshooting Seattle 18-7 in the third, but couldn't get another to go in a 4-2 loss.

Quick Hits - Adam Brooks' point streak comes to an end at 15 games. - Sean Richards' goal was his first in the WHL. - Tyler Brown stopped all five shots he faced in relief. - Game attendance was 4,701.

What's Next? The Pats close their road swing tomorrow night against the Tri-City Americans in a 9:00 p.m. CST puck drop. Tune in on Bennett Dunlop Ford Pats Hockey starting at 8:35 p.m.
