Sweet Revenge for Wheat Kings
January 16, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings home ice winning ways continued Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
Jordan Papriny turned aside 29 shots for his ninth career shutout and Wawanesa's Jordan Thomson scored what turned out to be his first ever goal as a Wheat King as Brandon blanked the Memorial Cup Host Red Deer Rebels by a score of 4-0.
Brandon opened the scoring in the first, added two more in the second and rounded out the scoring with a third period powerplay goal by captain Macoy Erkamps as the Wheat Kings improved to 27-12-2-2 and moved to within two points of second place Red Deer in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference standings.
Nolan Patrick and Tyler Coulter scored goals in the second for the Wheat Kings, who close out a 2-game home ice weekend on Saturday night against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
By earning Friday's shutout, Papirny moved into third place on the club's all time list for shutouts.
"This is, by far, one of the biggest wins of the year, especially how things didn't go well in our Alberta swing there," Papirny told CKLQ's Bruce Luebke following the win, which was sweet revenge for the Wheat Kings, who lost 10-0 in Red Deer two weeks ago when they were playing several men short. "After that game (on January 2), we had this game circled and I know for myself, I really wanted a bounce-back effort against these guys and everything just went well tonight."
Jayce Hawryluk added two assists in his return to the Wheat Kings' lineup after serving a five-game suspension.
With the win, Brandon remains two points up on second place Prince Albert in the Eastern Division as the Raiders came from behind to beat the Kootenay Ice 4-2.
Tickets to Saturday's game against the Warriors - presented by the Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre - go back on sale Saturday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also call 726-3555 or go online at keystonecentre.com.
Saturday is also another Source for Sports - SUBWAY Family Night. The $52 Wheat Kings Family Package includes two adult and two youth tickets, four 6" subs from Subway and four 2015-16 souvenir programs.
